Off with their heads! GM’s ongoing saga
GM has got a “tough row to hoe” as we say down south. Lackluster brands (Can you name three of their eight brands…How about ten of their 89 car nameplates? Me neither.) Growing foreign competition, and a big cost disadvantage (partly due to benefits for their union workers and retirees.) Their management has to get bold and get bold fast and anything big they do will of course be a gamble. Instead - as is SOP in Big Corporate America - one of the first things mentioned is “headcount cuts.” Ouch. Excuse me, but those heads have brains (not to mention feelings and families). Here’s my wacky idea #1: Wonder what would happen if GM thought of those heads as people…and encouraged them to think outside the box…rewarded them for taking risks…asked for “what are we doing wrong” and listened. Wacky idea #2: What if the top executives put skin in the game? Don’t produce results? You don’t get paid.
Oh, and the unions? Maybe it’s time to take a hard look at reality. If a company shrinks (or dies, or goes offshore) - your jobs go with it.
