Finally, someone who shares my fascination with mini-marts!
Susan Orleans in her latest compilation of travel pieces, My Kind of Place : Travel Stories from a Woman Who’s Been Everywhere In the introduction she notes, “…I love the jolt you get from travel. I love the freshness and suirprise of being in a new place, the way it makes even the most ordinary things seem extraordinary and strange…things I don’t notice at home jump out at me when I’m traveling…As soon as I get out of town, I love stopping for gas so I can poke around the gas station mini-market;besides the usual ubiquitous junk food and cigarettes, there are always odds and ends that reveal the character of the place.”
Nothing like a road trip - mundane becomes magical. Here in New Mexico, this is particularly true (plus we’ve got Route 66 - right in downtown Albuquerque.) So stop reading this, forget how much gasoline costs (still much lower than in other countries), and go for a weekend drive!

No - I’m not advocating environmental irresponsibility…do think before you drive…but we can’t solve all the world’s problems this weekend. If nothing else, take a walk around your own neighborhood…your own downtown…play “tourist.”

I couldnt agree more…I talk about the jolt you get from Travel. And there is a certain magic about visiting a new place all alone. Its like you leave your baggage behind. Its a new you, without boundaries and barriers
poking inside mini markets is de-stressing, its like being a child in a candy store..a very regular mundane candy store but it still brings on that twinge of excitement.
