Powerpoint Co-Dependency

I get on my soap box fairly frequently about the presenter/audience co-dependency. PP and such should be tools - not the be-all and end-all of the presentation. But, I can’t say it any better than Tom Peters’ blog post, Presentation Excellence. (Sure, I too hate the colors he uses on his slides…but there is a method to his madness.)

One of the best presentations/prospect meetings I ever had as a product developer in Corporate America was when the whiz-bang, multi-media, dancing dog & pony show froze, broke and died a horrible death…I had to toss aside the magic button box and actually talk to the prospect (Imagine that!…or as Mr. P might say, RE-IMAGINE THAT!)

great link Mary. And interesting discussion on the site. I myself love presenting, but never could get my juice flowing with PowerPoint (only my rant…). I adore working win Keynote, and it has fired up my creativity because it is such a darn nice tool.

Honest, really…I’m coming back to the land of Apple soon! In the meantime, it’s interesting to note that the very things that turn you or me on - turn others off…I was in a planning meeting the other day where two out of four people said “I hate motion effects, video, all that ‘fancy’ stuff in presentations!” A lot of folks prefer “safe” and “expected” even if it’s boring.
