Shakedown on Rt. 66

This holiday weekend I decided to take a road trip - on the old Rt. 66 which goes through several small (and struggling) towns here in NM. Darned if I didn’t get a speeding ticket in one of them. (Huh? the last sign said….) Funny, I started looking - and there were police strategically situated right at each point where the speed changed (and it changed frequently within the town’s two miles or so of main street.) Of course, small-town speed traps aren’t anything new - they’re a staple of old jokes and Grade Z movies. But, I’ve got to wonder if anybody has ever done a “customer cost-benefit analysis” for urban planning. For every ticket issued, is that one lost customer (or more) for the town (which is also desperately seeking tourism)?
