Happiness is a choice (& a good biz decision)
No, I’m not going all “new agey” warm & fuzzy on you. But, think about it. The only thing any of us can truly control is how we respond to other people and our environment. We can choose to make the most of what we have, in both work and life, and appreciate the small stuff. Or we can choose to be miserable as we play the “if only” game (”If only I made more money” “If I only I had a bigger house” “If only I had the corner office” etc.). We could get so wrapped up whining into our navel that we totally miss a great opportunity. And, if you’ve got employees, it’s a good marketing tactic to make your company a happy place to work - as Seth Godin talks about in his post re Starbucks - Inside and Outside However, employees also have some accountability in this. Here’s some way out there perspective from the fellas at Despair, Inc. (Take a deep breath and plant your tongue firmly in cheek when reading this…they do have some good points.)
