Shameless Self Promotion (but, with a tip you can use.)

Sally

I recently received a NAWBO-NNM Kudo award for “2005 Mentor of the Year” (I also won the award in 2003). The 2005 Kudos were handed out at a cheesy, silly - and very fun - “Oscars theme” recognition dinner (As the outgoing Vice President of Corporate and Economic Development, I also got an Oscar. Wheeee!) - with all of us voguing around in evening wear, giggling a lot (that may have had something to do with the champagne.) So, why should you be even remotely interested? Here’s why. Recognition - even the “silly” stuff (sometimes especially the “silly” stuff) - works in making customers smile and motivating people.

The Kudos awards mean a lot to me, as one has to be nominated by peers. And, the cheapo plastic Oscar is sitting on my desk as I type. Which brings to mind the “Purple Shovel” award a Habitat Executive Director gives out at his weekly staff meetings. It’s just a goofy little plastic shovel he got in a cereal box…but his staff proudly display it in their offices.

The trap? There has to be sincerity and meaning behind the cheapo plastic, or you’ll do more damage than good. People can spot “happy talk” a mile away.

Mary, I am one of the many NAWBO members who voted for you this year. Your service is one we all want, but for some silly reason have a hard time paying for - after all, it does not come in a box! (Meant that in many ways…)

You are great at putting skin in the game and helping to structure a deal that is a win-win for both sides. I really appreciate that about you and Bare Feet Studios is thrilled to have you on our team!
