Simplicity is Key (and uncommon common sense)

I’m just finishing up Simplicity is the Key by Trevor Gay (Trevor is a British author and consultant I met during a lively discussion on Tom Peters’ blog). The book is deceptively – well – simple, with nothing but common sense. And, I mean “nothing but common sense” as high praise, since such is often rare. (Unfortunately, the book is only available online via Amazon UK…but you can talk to Trevor via his blog above.)

Some of my favorite points:

From Chapter Two: Leadership & Management – chalk and cheese. “Small things are important – leadership is not only about the big picture.” He sums it up nicely with this quote from Warren Bennis, “Managers do things right…leaders do the right things.”

In Chapter Five, Trevor reviews the Ten great myths of patient and public involvement. While coming from the healthcare perspective, these apply to any type of business. Myth #4: “Patients talk about wants: we know what they need.” This applies to customers as well. Sometimes what they want, need…and will pay for…are three different things. Key is talking with patients and customers truthfully, no marketing hoo-ha.
