Business is always personal.
Haven’t we all heard the “It’s business, nothing personal!” line - usually when somebody has just finished ruining our meeting, project, day or career. Well, everything is personal when it’s humans dealing with humans, regardless of the context. Just ask any small biz owner - if a customer doesn’t pay their bill on time - it gets real personal, real fast.
Which leads to “business blogging.” Some people think that’s an oxymoron. “Why would I want to read other people’s opinions?” Well, I personally love to read (and respond to) opinions from people like Tom Peters, Seth Godin, Holly Buchanan, Michele Miller, Bruce Fryer and Dan Pink - just to list a few. Getting personal with such smart, experienced people really gets my synapses going. Helps me think and create, both for me and my clients. Sure, I don’t necessarily agree with them all the time, but Wowee! (as Tom might say) - what a great way to learn as well as participate in a growing global community. Great for both my brain and my business.
(Of course, one has to have a little discipline - there are so many great blogs out there, you could spend your entire day just reading…)
