I’m sorry. Your baby is ugly.

My Mom still insists I was a beautiful baby. Trust me, I wasn’t. But, she literally couldn’t see it. “Love is blind” goes for ideas and technologies too. I’ve suffered from temporary bad eyesight a time or two myself. Sometimes, we need a third party to ask the hard questions and point out the issues.

Of course, you may have to listen to some painful things, but wouldn’t you rather suffer a little pain before you kill your career or wipe out the kids’ college fund on a “world-changing” idea?

Two warning signs your baby may not win any beauty contests:

1. You’ve been presenting to potential investors for months - with no takers, not even a nibble.
2. You’re met with polite silence when you complain to other entrepreneurs about those clueless VCs and angel groups.
