Be different! (And, have something to say.)
As Oscar Wilde noted, “There are only two kinds of people who are really fascinating: people who know absolutely everything, and people who know absolutely nothing.” Hmmm…so where does that leave us bloggers, not to mention political pundits? (Randi Rhodes and Bill O’Reilly - here’s looking at you, you crazy kids.)
Since I know that I don’t know everything - I was “holed up” (as my Southern Mama would say) over the weekend, trying to get caught up on my teetering stack of business reading. However, this isn’t as dull as it sounds since I consider reading comic books - ahem - “graphic novels” as business reading. Helps me get the idea machine going. For example, if you’ve not read Frank Miller’s Sin City series - check it out. Highly creative and definitely not a kid’s comic.
But, my point (and I do have one) - is from another book I was reading, Never Eat Alone : And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time A lot of what Keith Ferrazi covers in the book is pretty basic, if you’ve been around the block a few times, but it’s a good “whack in the head” read and he devotes an entire chapter to “Be Interesting.” One key point: It’s not enough to stand out - you also have to have good content (in any type of conversation). Which directly relates to blogging - it’s all about having conversations. And, some people who are great live entertainers are boring writers. Example: I think Ann Coulter is a real hoot (in small doses) but her blog is ho-hum, same ol’ bla-blah.
And, you shouldn’t try to be all things to all people, as Roxanne notes over at Bare Feet Studios.
