I do some of my best work while walking
Before I dash off to give a seminar…thought I’d share something for “Silly Friday” and martini time.
Courtesy of boing boing. Walking the pet tortoise.
I (usually) walk faster than a tortoise (and, no those aren’t my legs)…but I actually do some of my best thinking, i.e., work, during my daily power walks. And, if I don’t walk, I find by the end of the week, the brain cells aren’t moving as fast as needed either.
This popped up in my RSS feed about the same time I was reading In Praise of Slowness : How A Worldwide Movement Is Challenging the Cult of Speed Going slow doesn’t mean being lazy or not getting things done. It is about appreciating what we have, not being a slave to our clocks - focusing on quality versus quantity and not trying to do everything, connect everywhere at once. (C’mon, unless you’re a brain surgeon on call, you just DO NOT need to talk on your cell while driving, in the theatre, or at the grocery store.) “Be Here Now” - the old IBM motto - is actually pretty good. And, choose three things a day and do them well. Me? I quit wearing a watch months ago, start my day with listing the three things, and do my best to not even turn on the computer over the weekend. Those days are for fun, friends, family, new experiences (and just vegging out). Then I’m ready to dive back in on Monday morning.
So - tortoise optional - but stop reading this and go for a stroll. And, think about going slowly. Gotta dash now - but this evening is reserved for reading, some good tunes and martini drinking. Tomorrow, I’ll be playing with the cutest little boy in the universe, Jesse - and having serious discussions about geo-political issues (in toddler talk.)

I left our teleconference today, looked through your blog entries to find one to comment on just for the practice as Roxanne suggested, and this one caught my attention. I love the way the universe provides just the right message at the perfect time.
With so many things vying for my attention each day, what often got relegated to the back burner was exercise and funtime. No matter what I did to try to simplify my life, there always seemed to be more to do. More emails to read, more mail to open, more activities to juggle…And I was burning out! Frankly, I was afraid to even learn about blogging lest I have one more thing to add to my to-do list!
I haven’t worn a watch for many months either, and I just recently had an opportunity to leave my cell phone behind for 9 days while at Sanoviv Medical Institute (www.sanoviv.com) for a complete health assessment and heavy metal/mercury detox program. Two of their many recommendations: exercise and do more things I love.
When I returned, I found myself leaving the phone behind more often - on purpose, and not automatically answering it. It was liberating (not being a brain surgeon on call!) I took out my old walking shoes and hit the bosque. Gave myself a good blister, so now I’m shopping for a new pair for my new walking regime. Not only will this give me the exercise I need, but also time alone, which is so precious and rare, or time with friends in stimulating fun conversation.
While at Sanoviv, I also enjoyed two walking meditations. This is the kind of walk where I could take our pet tortoise (FB for Fireball)! Just because you can’t sit still doesn’t mean you can’t take time to meditate.
They sound like contradictions, but both powerwalking and doing your best thinking, and walking meditations doing your best not to think, are likely to improve health, happiness and productivity.
