Goooogle isn’t always Gooood.

steak I was reading a wonderful food blog and up pops a Goooogle ad Mad cow disease info Yum! Makes me want to fire up the barbie, what about you? This link also takes you to PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) a group many people (maybe your potential customers) don’t like, to put it mildly.

So, before you sign up, think about what kind of ads could be popping up on your site. (No, you don’t control them. It’s part of Google’s mad genius to randomly insert them depending on your content.) It would have really been bad if I’d been on - say - a gourmet steak selling site. Oh dear.

So, I don’t have Google ads here. Of course, it’s up to the individual blogger and accepted practice these days. (And, yes, I’d love to have the money.) But, I wouldn’t feel right having, for example, posted about how consultants shouldn’t promise easy answers or guarantee results - and have an ad for “Easy Answers! Guaranteed Results!” pop up by the post. Cognitive disconnect all the way around.

    Mary,

You’re right! I posted about how bad the new ads for the Fusion razor by Gillette are on my site. This of course prompted a google ad for the Fusion razor. So of course I followed up with a post of how not smart Google ads are. Isn’t marketing fun!

    I like your site (-:

I wonder if the percentage of bad placement can be tracked like everything else on the web. I see this happen at least once daily.

Hmmm. Well, I’m sure Google could track it, but somehow I don’t see them promoting this feature.

And, yes, marketing is fun - if a bit (a lot) surreal some days! We do have to keep our sense of humor about such things. So, good for you Michael!
