SEO Cons
“Pssst! Get your top search engine rankings here!”
We all want good search engine rankings - and there are plenty of con artists out there playing to that desire. So, I was curious and clicked on Achieving Top Rankings are Easy. This was a “headline” link under Top News over at Web Pro News. Guess what? It takes me to the home page of a company, Web CEO, which is - you guessed it - selling web software. Now, the company may be great, the products stellar and they certainly seem to have good reviews. But, what were their marketers thinking? Tacky, tacky, tacky.
Getting and keeping top rankings isn’t easy (or quick), as any real Web pro will tell you. And, if you’re writing marketing copy, remember there are cranky old curmudgeons like me out here in the virtual marketplace. (And customers that don’t appreciate sales pitches disguised as news.)

It might take some time until the dust settles in the market and people will come to understand that just using some SEO tools won’t get them where they really want to be.
I think, ultimately, the marketers will survive that provide a more holistic range of services and really understand the customer’s needs.
Helping customers to develop their unique selling propositions and assisting them in avoiding costly mistakes will be key.
That is something that can hardly be outsourced and does require people skills (I am not predicting a return to the stone age here).
But so many people are telling us that marketing will never be the same again. I would like to be a bit of the devil’s advocate here and say: We are in a gigantic marketing/advertising bubble and a lot of people have forgotten what really matters in marketing (& business in general). Bubbles eventually tend to burst…

Personally, I think a lot of the noise around the big changes in marketing is just that - noise. The tools are changing, the jobs remain the same. People want to connect, care, and be respected. And, they are increasingly sick of the old-line “hey, toxic sludge is good for you!” type of marketing push and spin.
Of course, change is scary to many - particularly when it affects their bottom line. That’s why there’s so much noise around advertising and such.
