Why You Didn’t Get My Business: The I Hate Pink List

Miss kittyThis happens in every size and type of business and non-profit.

You base your marketing to me, a single adult woman, on one or more of the following knee-jerk assumptions:

1. I’m drawn to anything pink, small, cute, frilly and/or heart-shaped.
2. I just love, love, love to buy shoes (or clothes or make-up).
3. I’m either a mother or want kids. Because all women have or want kids, right? And, we go all gooey if your pitch includes baby images.
4. I’m intimidated by technology. (Irritated, frustrated, amazed, fascinated – yes. Intimidated – no.) Read More: Holly Buchanan on Technology and Women.
5. I’m intimidated by financial planning. (I’m a grown-up. I can read and do basic math.)
6. I’m baffled about how to compete in big bad ol’ business.
7. I want to buy safe boring cars.
8. I don’t like to travel or dine alone.
9. I want to dress like an adolescent anoxeria victim. (There should be a law that certain types of clothing cannot be made in any size larger than 4 or sold to anyone over the age of 25.)
10. I obsess about my wrinkles. (Okay, I don’t want to look like a shai pei, but I like having facial expressions.)
11. I’m desperately seeking a mate. (I might partner up again one of these days, if he was the one and lived at least 15 minutes away…and traveled a lot.)
12. I don’t like movies where things explode or blood splatters. (The exploding blood-bloated vampires in Blade were a bit much, but cool.)

Wrong on all counts. And, I’m a timid frou-frou femme compared to some of my friends. (I also personally loathe the color pink.)

Mary – Great laugh out loud post about women that I can related to! Thank you for reminding the world that swwc (single women without children) and a ‘partner’ might still be worthy of a targeted message. By the way, true confessions .. in bloggy transparency, I really like pink. But that’s okay .. and it’s okay too if you don’t. OMG perhaps that means that not all swwc are alike ;-)

    Yvonne,

Viva la difference! Actually, a little very hot, vivid pink can be a good accent color, in small doses! See? I can be open-minded!

    ;-)
