Martini Musing: The “Not So Big Life” (Again)
(Stay with me here - this is a Friday musing, but also has a point to make about the value of blogging.)
I’m a huge fan of Sarah Susanka, the architect who wrote the Not So Big House books. I’m not alone - the books are very popular and in March 2007 This Old House magazine listed The Not So Big House as number three on its list of ten “must-own tomes for any serious homeowner.” I’d add that anyone serious about great design should read memorize Sarah’s books.
Last year, I wrote a Friday post about my “Not So Big Life” in which I listed a few things that make me happy (and that costs little or no money), noting that, “As I’ve gotten older, I’m much more focused on quality of life versus quantity. Money is a good thing, but I strive for richness of experience. So, ‘Not So Big’ is more than home design to me - it has become how I live my life.”
I continued on my merry blogging way. Then, this past Tuesday I got a call from a reporter, Molly Millet, for the Pioneer Press in St. Paul, MN. She had googled “Not So Big Life” and found my old post. Wanted to interview me since - ta-da! - Sarah Susanka has a new book called (wow), The Not So Big Life. I babbled a bit and answered a follow-up email from Molly noting that - let’s face it - I’m just a Susanka groupie. Then, on Wednesday, I got a call from Sarah! We chatted a bit about design, books, and life. She asked if it’d be okay if she linked to my site. (Oh gee, lemme think…) In short, made my day, even my week.
That’s the great thing about blogging - you can make personal connections that otherwise would be difficult if not impossible. And, you can do it without ever leaving home or - ahem - even getting dressed - for those of you who still think all bloggers do is sit around in ratty robes, eat cold pizza, and write about their cats. (I only do that on Saturdays…
)
Happy Friday everyone! And, remember that in blogging, as in life, ya just never know! Something great and totally unexpected can happen this Very. Next. Second.
(Many hardworking good people can’t afford decent homes of any size - so if you enjoyed this post, or any of my others - please go drop a few bucks at Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity. Or, find the Habitat in your area and get involved.)
P.S. Sarah - if you make it to Albuquerque on your book tour - I’ll be there. I’ll even buy a cigarette lighter to hold aloft while I shout “Encore! Encore!”

Well, how cool is THAT? Isn’t the blogosphere an amazing phenomenon? I, too, am a HUGE fan of Sarah Susanka, coincidentally was poring over a couple of her books this past week (dreaming of my not-so-big house of the future). To find out she contacted you means, for me, that she’s just the kind of person I thought she was - accessible, friendly, and unassuming.
Makes for a VERY BIG Friday!!
Cheers,
Michele
