Mary Schmidt Marketing Troubleshooter

A while back, I did a pithy riff re The Secret (oh! ah!) in my post, The Only 4 Secrets You Need to Know! (They are: Focus. Work. Courage. Learn. Bonus: Success isn’t the same as money. Ta-Da!)

Then, as I’m reading Sarah Susanka’s The Not So Big Life: Making Room for What Really Matters I run across this:

A quotation from the mountaineer William Hutchison Murray’s The Scottish Himalayan Expedition, written in 1951 (often misattributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) says it best: …the moment one definitely commits onself, then providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would come his way.

This should not, however, be misinterpreted to mean that the Universe operates at our beck and call. As Sarah writes,

Murray understood that once you are open to the yearnings of your heart and soul, almost everything that shows up in your life can be used to help elucidate the things you are engaging in most passionately. Life prods us, cajoles us, and woos us in all sorts of marvelous ways when we are open to engaging.

Or, as I sometimes remind myself: LOOK AROUND!

(P.S. I’m incredibly grateful that I’m far enough up Maslow’s hierarchy to have the luxury of thinking about all this. We Americans tend to forget that much of our lifestyle is due to the luck of the draw - not our inherent entitlement to all things. Oops, almost fell off my soapbox there…)
