Martini Musing - Make A Difference
John Schreitmueller, Motto, on his perspective after time in the ICU: “If you’re alive today and are able to walk, chew your food, breathe in the air without a machine, smell fresh cut grass, look into the deep, lovely eyes of a horse and hear your daughter describe her rush activities on campus, you are already wealthy beyond belief. All the rest is squarely in your control. How will you make a difference with the riches that are already yours?”
…And, as a friend of mine says when a day isn’t going all that great, “Well, at least the big rock hasn’t fallen out of the sky yet.”
It’s all about perspective - the hard part is remembering that.
I think I’ll go sit under my knarled old apple tree, watch the hummingbirds, and enjoy the big, blue rock-free sky for a while…Have a great weekend!
If you want to make a difference right now, check out Kiva (micro loans to entrepreneurs around the world - if you’ve already got a Paypal account, it takes about a minute to help someone.). You can also check out volunteer opportunities at VolunteerMatch. Or, do some research and get involved in your local community (Habitat for Humanity, Civitan clubs, independent business alliances and so on.) Last but certainly not least, food banks can always use contributions - people eat all year ’round, not just during the holidays. (But be nice - they really can’t use those canned kumquats that have been at the back of your pantry since Carter was president…)
