Presentation Tips from The Special Olympics

Special Olympics RacesAt today’s Duke City Civitan weekly lunch, we passed out our annual donation checks to several very deserving groups, including Roadrunner Food Bank, Ronald MacDonald House, and the Special Olympics. One of the mentally challenged SO participants, Ken, gave a brief speech. Here’s what he did:

1. He had one thought per page. Sure, it was to help him but it also helped the presentation go right along! And - ahem - he didn’t use Powerpoint.
2. He kept it simple.
3. He told a story.
4. He wasn’t afraid to show some personality. And, he seemed to be enjoying himself.

So there ya go.

P.S. If you’re looking for a low-key, grassroots way to help your community, check out Civitan. Other groups Duke City Civitan supports include Hogares (programs for troubled youth), UNM Children’s Hospital, Casa Esperanza, and Presbyterian Healthcare, the only non-profit healthcare provider in New Mexico. Here in Albuquerque, we make direct financial contributions as well as work at events such as UNM Lobo games to earn money. We also do things like visit Hogares once a week to provide dinner and emotional support and pack food at Roadrunner. (I get a contact high from all the sugar in the cereal General Mills donates in 500 pound bags…but, hey, it’s for a good cause! ack, ack…)
