No, I Won’t Write Your Brochure.

Person looking at my business card: “Oh, you’re in marketing. Will you send me your pricing to write a new brochure?”
Me: No.

Certainly I can write. I enjoy it and I do a lot of it for clients as part of larger projects. However, I’m a marketer not a marcom producer. The former is “black and white” marketing; the latter is “color” marketing. A lot of thinking, analysis and development needs to happen before anybody starts writing anything. Here’s how Maureen Rogers explains it:

When people ask me what type of marketing I do, I sometimes answer “black and white,” i.e., I focus on those things associated with market research, product and market strategy, positioning. I explain what I do as a product marketer vs. what marcom does - “color marketing.” I am a complete, 100% believer that “color marketing” doesn’t work unless you get the “black and white marketing” done first, and done right.

So, no, I won’t write your brochure.

[…] Here’s what I find: Clients - even those who can write well - have a very difficult time translating their idea into good marketing copy. They’re simply too close to it. On the other hand, if I sit them down, give them an adult beverage, and ask them to simply “tell me about it” - we get to the gold. Related Post: No, I Won’t Write Your Brochure. […]
