Link Lovin’: True Love or Cheap Date?

For my readers who feel they’re still a bit behind the Web learning curve - wondering why bloggers are so obsessive about number of links and other worldshaking matters such as RSS feeds…

We humans love to rank things (and each other) don’t we? The biggest, the best, the sexiest, the richest, the most popular. But let’s get a little perspective into the mix. Popularity doesn’t automatically translate into quality or success, on or off the Web. For example, how did the “most popular” kids in your high school end up? Hmmm….

Technorati’s methods for ranking blog popularity (number of links) are totally mystifying to me. I think reading of chicken entrails may be involved. (bug-filled entrails at that) I like to be liked as much as the next person, but my reaction to my roller coaster rankings is largely “So what?” So, 303 207 229 195 210 people link to me today. Technorati calls the number of links “authority.” Cute, guys. Playing to the tender blogger ego. Are these people actually reading my blog? Are their readers reading my blog? Does anybody get anything of value from my writing? Am I going to get more (and better) business from those links?

And, it’s not just me on the roller coaster - here’s what they show for my blogging buddy, Phil, who linked to my post last Friday.

Actually Mary, it means I love you and your writing 3 times as much as you thought I did!

Happy Monday and first day of October :)

I’m trying to learn not to look. It’s not just that Technorati is bug filled, it is…or that they’re removing links like crazy in a losing battle with blog spam. It’s really the fact that besides the two of us, I don’t think very many people are bothering with Trackbacks anymore…and even fewer appear to be using Technorati or even bothering to send to them.

Been meaning to post The W List of women bloggers, inspired by the AdAge Power 150 list. Here it is, and I’m proud to be included. A day in an astrologer’s life by Jacqueline BigarA Girl Must Shop by Megan Garnhum A Little Pregnant by Julie A Luminou…

Yep. I’m over Technorati. It is a way of measuring which blogs have worked the hardest to get links, been around a while, write on popular topics (Paris Hilton, iPhone), or all of the above.

I wish there was a way to find excellently written blogs on an interesting subject with a friendly author.

I tried excellentlywrittenblogsonaninterestingsubjectwithafriendlyauthor.com but there was nothing there.

Well, whaddaya waiting for? Start it!

    Or, maybe “Wedon’tneednostinkin’rank”

Until then, I’ll continue to do what I’ve always done, rely on the recommendations of bloggers whom I like and respect. The old-fashioned way, ya know?
