Nobody Comes To Our Web Site Anyway.
I heard this the other day as rationale for not spending any time or money on a company’s site. (Yes, really.)
Of course, this sounds stupid (’cuz it is.) But out in the real world, I often talk to otherwise smart people who somehow see the Web as totally separate from their business and their marketing of that business. They barely have a site. They don’t “surf” the Web (don’t have time.) They don’t read blogs (don’t have time to waste.) And so on and so forth.
Reminds me of the time a hardcore, born-again friend of mine smarmed, “You don’t have to believe in God. He believes in you.”
Well, we don’t have to “believe” in the Web but it sure “believes” in us. If you’re thinking you can do without - just do a quick google search on yourself, your company and your competitors. Oy! (Can’t find anything about yourself? Well, that tells you something right there. And it’s not a good thing. Even local customers, of all ages, routinely do research on the Web before they call or get in their cars.)
(There’s a reason I’m the top Google search result for “marketing troubleshooter.” There’s a method to the madness as I soon roll out a new site.)

If these people are in their 40’s and 50’s, they’re the same ones who said in 1994, “I don’t have time to read e-mails!” Now, you can’t separate them from their Blackberries. To them, e-mail is their entire virtual universe. But that’s like saying planet Earth is the entire real universe. Wake up people! It’s the 21st century out there.
