Martini Musing - “What’s Tappening?”

water tapOne of the marvels of modern marketing is that we now pay people to bottle tap water for us. (Somewhere my hearty farm folk ancestors are laughing their ectoplasmic heads off). However, the only time I drink or buy bottled water these days is when it’s the only choice.

Thanks to Yvonne over at Lip-Sticking for passing along the link to Tappening (I particularly like the call to action, “Use The Tap And Save The World.”) Also, check out John Tesh’s (yes that John Tesh) post, Do You Drink Water From The Sink Or The Store?

Happy Friday! I’m off the save the world, one slurp from the faucet at a time!
And, of course martini glasses can be used over and over again! ;-)

P.S. Remember, there is only so much water ever. We’re drinking the same stuff as the dinosaurs did. So don’t let the tap run while brushing your teeth or cleaning the kitchen. (Sure, it’s a “little thing” but little adds up.) Even if you now live in a “wet” area - that can change very quickly. Here’s the discussion we’re having in Albuquerque about water - and it’s not just a desert problem.

I’ve found that using a refrigerator Brita container (with a spigot) works great. We have a wee bit of arsenic and lead in our water, makes you smarter I hear. Just grab an empty plastic water bottle, fill ‘er up and we’re ready to go.

Water problems? You haven’t got water problems! :-P
    Just to our north:

Or for a city of ~1.8 million people? 28% of capacity in the dams:

I recall a friend who moved to London in the early 90’s. Her laughing at the locals reaction to two weeks without rain. Your “wet area” comment is very spot on! :-)

But seriously, if you’re looking for inspirational ideas on how to save water? Check out the various Australian water authorities. Parts of Oz have been under drought for 11 years; Most of the rest “only” 6 years:

What is really depressing for the farmers is they can be totally flooded and still be in drought. The ground is too hard and baked dry for the water to soak in.

    Cheers!

We’ve got arsenic here too…and have been drinking it for hundreds of years. So, I don’t even (gasp) have a filter. Just straight from the tap into a jug and into the fridge.

Steve - we’ve got the same problem here - even when it does rain after a long dry spell - it runs off and we have flash flooding. Thanks for the links.

I’m hoping more people begin to realize that water is a finite choice - we’ve gotten incredibly spoiled that we simply turn on the tap and voila! it’s there.

Simply going on a long hike without enough water gives you perspective. There’s a reason why early explorers thought NM was Hell - and many of us now find it the Land of Enchantment. These days we’ve got irrigation, indoor plumbing and air conditioning, which also largely depends on water for our swamp coolers. Not to mention horseless carriages, cell phones, and hiking sandals ;-)
