Martini Musing - Connections: Compulsion or Commitment?

Man asleep on laptopMy friend Maureen Rogers’ post Weekend Warriors is particularly apt on this Friday when I’m full of spring fever and out of ambition:

On a recent Sunday morning, I checked my e-mail, and found one from one of the other consultants I’m working with on a client project.

I replied, and as I was hitting the “send” button, a message came in from one of the clients who was on the thread.

Five minutes later, one of other clients responded.

Of the six people on the e-mail list, four were working at the same time on a Sunday morning.

Wow. That’s just sad.

Like Maureen, it’s no big deal for me to work after hours or on the weekend, although I do my best not to make a habit of it. It’s a trade-off for those Fridays when I decide to shut down early and go see a really bad movie…or the Tuesday when I feel more like hiking than cranking on the computer…but, there’s a big difference between compulsion and commitment.

Ask yourself “do I really need to do this right now?” You’ll be amazed at how many things can wait until Monday….or forever in the make-busy corporate world. (Back in my corporate days, I used to have a “three-pile” system, automatically sorting a large number of “urgent, critical, do right now” emails and memos into the “don’t bother unless somebody much higher up screams” pile. Very few of those ever resurfaced.)
