Headline: GOP Targeting Wal-Mart Moms
Political marketing is fascinating. One of the most fascinating things is how the “political experts” get a glimmer of an idea and run with it. It appears that the GOP is moving from “Soccer Moms” to “Wal-Mart Moms.”
In addition to those Moms, the GOP has discovered “social networkers.” Wowee! let’s get us some of that conservative Facebook mojo!
The media release, done when McCain was the presumed nominee says:
The top campaign official for the presumed GOP presidential nominee, John McCain, is identifying five groups of target voters.Rick Davis told a meeting of Republican state chairmen at Santa Ana Pueblo Friday that those groups include young voters and Hispanics.
They also include what he calls “Wal-Mart moms,” “Rehab Republicans” and “Facebook independents.”
…He called Facebook independents tech-savvy, social networkers who are conservative.
Hmmm…those are awfully big groups…and has Mr. Davis spent any time on Facebook (or at Wal-Mart)? if the McCain campaign was doing real marketing, the first thing I’d tell them is “focus.” (Second thing: Lose the assumptions.)
Perhaps I should send Mr. Davis a copy of The Soccer Mom Myth.
P.S. I’d love to hear his definition of “conservative.”
P.P.S. What about “Target Moms?” (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Don’t send that book. I would be happy to let them learn this lesson the hard way.

The good news (or bad, depending on your perspective) is that I could sit and physically read the book to them face to face and they’d still not get it.
Those assumptions are written on stone tablets somewhere…Here’s hoping Obama breaks ‘em all.

[…] “We’re marketing to women!” or “The ‘V’ Factor.” McCain (by his own campaign’s admission) needs the woman vote to win - more specifically the Hillary woman vote. So, apparently the thinking goes - we’ve all got the basic anatomy, why should we care about what any of the candidates say about the government’s role in what we do with that anatomy? We’ll just blindly go vote for our fellow “V.” Never mind that Ms. Palin seems almost the complete opposite of Hillary.
