“Mine is Better.” So What?
Maureen Rogers recently did a riff on “My technology’s better than their technology” - and why that often doesn’t matter.
This is one of the biggest blind spots I run into when working with entrepreneurs. “I use only the best, ‘gourmet’ ingredients.” “Nobody has this recipe.” “Our software was developed by a super genius.” “Everybody who tries it, loves it.” And so on.
The problem here is - well - the blind spot. The target customers are already doing something to solve that problem, fill that need, scratch that itch (and they probably have never heard - or care about - that super genius developer.) To make it even worse, there are already companies well established in solving, filling, and scratching. Those “everybodies” could be a very small group…and how are you going to reach more? (You can always sell one of anything. No matter how expensive, crappy, or stupid - somebody somewhere will love it.)
Certainly, we should all strive to offer a top quality product or service - but people may not care…or it may simply be too late for you to make a dent in the market.
