Duck And Cover Ain’t A Success Strategy
As a Boomer, I well remember the “duck and cover” drills we had in grade school. Yep, that little desk was going to save me from the blast…uh-huh. It was a nice little fiction that I suppose helped keep our parents from totally freaking out over the cold war.
These days we’re all trying to not freak out over the economic meltdown, while the media continues to beat the drums of doom and gloom. Certainly there’s a lot of danger, but it’s the non-radioactive, non-world-ending kind. I look at it this way – if the worst thing that could happen to me is that I end up living in one room – well, I’ll still be living and that one room will have a roof and (as God is my witness) be clean. Do I think that will happen? No. But, it’s good to keep perspective.
Nobody ever succeeded while hiding under their desk. (Besides, it’s uncomfortable down there…)
P.S. Perspective: Unemployment in 1933 was 25%. Dropped to 15% by 1937, when it started going up again after FDR cut New Deal programs in order to – gasp! – balance the budget.
