How to Survive The Recession (Quit Obsessing)

Tom Peters wrote a list, “Dealing With Recessionary Times.” No quick or magic answers, and a lot of it has to do with – ta-da! – perspective and hard work. Just as always.

Times are always difficult for entrepreneurs and innovators. (Do I really need to repeat the oft-told line of Edison’s about failing thousands of times?)

At least here in Albuquerque, the local biz owners seem to have gotten tired of being frightened, of obsessing over the headlines. “We’re gonna be fine” is the theme these days. Sure, we’re having to revisit some of our grander plans (both personal and professional) but we’re also looking for more ways we can help each other, since – ultimately – all economies are local.

I leave you with a big one (on Peters list and mine): STOP hanging out with negative people. I had this epiphany several years ago when the economy was chugging right along. I got really tired of hearing “You can’t do that in New Mexico” or “Albuquerque is [too small; too big; too stupid; too diverse; not diverse enough; too developed; too undeveloped; too business focused; too business unfriendly...]” I finally realized (I can be a little slow sometimes) that the people who said such things couldn’t/wouldn’t make it in even the best of circumstances or places. And, stupidity knows no geographic limits.

Ahhhh. Another breath of fresh air from Mary.

And that air doesn’t only come from the high desert. It can be anywhere as long as you stay away from those negative folks.

Thanks for the reminder about those energy-sinks.

Spot on – and I’ve posted it as one of my ‘Survival Seven’ stories on the UK-based site dedicated to getting positive about this recession. Keep up the good work!
