“But, the photos are blurred!”

Mary SchmidtYears ago, I was producing a complete new set of brochures for a company and we were trying to break out of the shiny people stock photo ghetto….so I hired a top photographer who specialized in black & white “candids.”  (Back then B&W was pretty rad all by itself.) We went on location at various sites – and he probably took several thousand shots total of real employees – sitting, standing, moving, talking…

When we got the final documents, the response was mostly very favorable (and the creative agency won several awards).  However, one of the head honchos said, “But, Mary – the photo is blurred!” (It was an action shot of someone walking).  He was uncomfortable with anything other than the usual stock stuff.

Candid is HARD (in images, blogging or any type of communications) – it can be misunderstood (and make people uncomfortable.)  But, if people “get it” – they really “get it” – and those are the people you want to do biz with…customers, investors, or vendors.  That old time Grok n’ roll, grok n’ roll.
